There are a lot of free online file storage/backup services available if you only need to store a few files, such as BitCasa, iDrive, ADrive, Google Drive, Amazon Drive, and hundreds others.
They can be better than buying an external hard drive, because:
Usually the first few GB are free, depending on which service you select.
Often they include software or instructions on backing up your files automatically.
Data that you store on online storage services should be as secure as the password you use to protect it, as opposed to an external hard drive kept in your home may be more susceptible to theft.
If your home computers/drives crash, or your home catches fire or is flooded, you should be able to recover all (or most of) your files stored on online storage services.
They key word there is "should," because there have been reports of problems restoring files from some services (such as this).
They are in the business of keeping your data safe and recoverable, so they should provide support if you have troubles doing so, but just be aware that they are not always 100% reliable.
Online drive services let you sync/share your files between your computers, and some let you share certain files with co-workers (like Google Drive).
However, if you need to store a lot of data (more than a few GB), an external hard drive like this may be an excellent value at a one-time cost of 3.5 cents per GB rather than having size limits or paying a monthly storage fee.
This Seagate External Drive includes a 2-year warranty.
Best things to backup are your digital photos and digital videos.
When backing up ultra-sensitive information (tax returns, medical records, source code), be sure to use strong passwords and/or storing them on drives that are kept in secure places.
