Plasma TVs are being phased out, and these could be the last LG and Samsung TVs made with Plasma.
Manufacturers can build an LED backlit or LED edgelit TV with LCD displays much cheaper than ever, while building Plasma displays is quite expensive.
The superior features of Plasma over LED/LCD is the black levels, viewing angles, and smooth/natural motion (like when watching sports).
The disadvantages of Plasma over LED/LCD are their weight (they usually weigh more), their thickness (usually thicker than LCD), Plasmas sometimes have a slight buzzing noise when on, and they consume about 3 times more electricity then LED/LCD.
Here is a Crutchfield article that explains the differences between Plasma and LED/LCD televisions.
In our opinion, if you primarily use your TV to watch sports and have a dimly lit room, Plasma may be a better choice for you than LED/LCD.
Soon, OLED displays will become the new standard, but those TVs are still a few years away from becoming affordable.
OLED can emit light per-pixel like Plasma can.
This means OLED can have similar deep-black level and excellent viewing angle as Plasma, in an ultra-thin (and curvable) low energy display.

- Samsung 60-inch Plasma 1080p HDTV for $1500 Samsung 60-inch Plasma 1080p HDTV for $1500.
This is Samsung's latest and last Plasma TV.
This 8500-series Plasma was released in 2013, and will likely be the last Plasma sold by Samsung.
This is a discontinued model, and once BestBuy's inventory sells out, it could be difficult to find them again.
This Samsung PN60F8500 has very positive reviews, weighs 90 pounds, includes 4 pairs of 3D active glasses, and uses a Plasma display instead of an LCD.
Manufacturers are phasing out their plasma screens because they are expensive to build, while LED-LCD TVs are becomming much cheaper.
The future of TV is OLED, however it will be at least a few more years before they become affordable.
Advantages of Plasma over LED-LCD:
Unlike LED/LCD which must maintain a constant bulb of light passing through the screen, Plasma can actually turn off individual pixels, producing true blacks.
Some newer LED-LCD TVs can produce black levels similar to Plasma, but until OLED becomes mainstream, there is no way to get black levels as good as a Plasma today.
600Hz refresh rate, which is great for watching sports and anything in motion.
LED-LCD screens have 60 to 240 Hz.
Better viewing angle than LED-LCD.
Disadvantages of Plasma:
Plasma consumes more electricity than LED-LCD.
Our guess is about 3 times as much electricity as a similarly-sized LED-LCD, but your actual power consumption may vary.
Plasma can generate a lot of heat, and usually have a built-in fan to regulate the temperature.
Plasma has a glass screen, and can be more prone to glare than a LED-LCD.
Do not face your plasma toward a light source or window, because the plasma's glass screen can act as a mirror.
It will reflect light in the same way as a touch-screen device like an iPad, iPhone, or Motorola Droid.
If you place your iPad or phone where you want your TV to be, and if you can see a glare, then your Plasma would produce the same glare.
Many plasmas, especially 2012 and earlier models, produce a slight "buzzing" sound when on.
The reviews of the Samsung say there is a slight buzz in this 2013 model, but it will be drown out by TV's sound at normal levels.
If you are looking for a great TV today for your living room or home theater, we recommend this TV.
