Details:Tips on Searching for Flights:
(repost)

If you are interested in traveling somewhere by plane, domestically and internationally, we have some tips.
  • Open multiple Google Flights windows. For travel within North America and the Caribbean, use one-way searches. For international travel, use round trip searches.
  • If Southwest services your city, open Southwest.com too.
Tip #1: Finding the Deals. Almost all regular airfares within North America are based on one-way fares. There is (usually) no savings on a round trip ticket versus two one-way tickets. However, searching for one-way fares can give you more options including using separate airlines and airports:
  1. Open up 2 browser tabs, and navigate each to www.google.com/flights. Choose one-way on both tabs, or click here to open Google Flights with one-way selected.
  2. On the first window, enter your originating city and the city you want to visit. On the second window, reverse the cities to find a one-way fare to get you home.
  3. Click on the date box, and a 2-month calendar will appear showing prices available for each days. For an example, click here. Click the date box on your second tab window, then you can see a complete breakdown of all available prices on each day.
  4. From there, you can plan the cost of your trips.
Tip #2: Two Cities for the Airfare Cost of One. Since you are searching for one-way airfare anyway, perhaps include another city in your plans. For example, if you want to visit Philadelphia but find the airfare higher than Baltimore, you could include Baltimore into your travel plans. Train service connects those two cities, making it fairly easy to get between them and fly home from a different airport. This trick works really well in Florida and California, because there are several airports and one-way car rentals are often as cheap as dropping it off from the same-location. An Orlando trip could include a couple days at the beach, if a one-way car rental is cheap and flights out of another Florida airport is much lower than flying home from Orlando.

For car rentals, Costco members can use Costco Travel to find great deals. Everyone else can use travel.bjs.com to find great deals on car rentals.

Tip #3: Hidden Fees of Low-Budget Airlines. Allegiant, Frontier, and other low-budget airlines charge hefty fees for checked luggage AND carry-on luggage. Some fees could cost as much as $100 extra per person! Additionally, those carriers have a lot of complaints about late flights, cancellations, and lost luggage. When comparing prices, be sure to factor in the cost and possible stress of the airline you choose.

To see a complete breakdown of checked and carry-on baggage fees, use Kayak's Airline Fee List.

For a list of the best (and worst) airlines in the US, see a recent airline ranking list on the Wall Street Journal and CNN.

Tip #4: Finding International Flight Deals.
  1. Do a round-trip search on Google Flights.
  2. If you cannot find a good international flight deal from your city, and you have some flexibility, try searching from another city. International travel can often be cheap for travel originating from Miami, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, and Chicago. Cheap enough to cover your cost to get to one of those cities. For example:
    • We found round trip to Tel Aviv from New York City for $650. If it costs about $200 roundtrip to get to New York City, and prices to Tel Aviv are over $1,000 from your city, you could save hundreds.
    • We found round trip to Bangkok for over $1,000 from Dallas, but only $650 from Houston. Southwest flies between Dallas and Houston Hobby for about $180 round trip, and a one-way car rental from Hobby to Bush can be about $20, so a Dallas passenger can get to Thailand for $150 less via Houston.
    • We found round trip to Johannesburg, South Africa for $600 from Miami, but over $1,000 from Atlanta. Southwest flies from Atlanta to Ft. Lauderdale (30 miles from Miami) for about $88 round trip, so an Atlanta passenger can save $300 on a flight get to South Africa via Florida.
So, don't always assume the airfare you see is the airfare you have to pay. If you have some flexibility with your travel plans, you can save.
