Details:Live TV Service for $35/mo, Free Apple TV When Pre-Paying For 3 Months
If you like having live TV, don't need a DVR, and want to same some money, this deal could be for you (with some drawbacks).

According to several news reports like this one, DirectTV Now just launched. This streaming-only live TV service does not require a satellite dish or cable box, and works over your Internet connection.

The good parts of the deal:

They are offering an introductory plan that includes 100 HD channels for $35/mo. The $35/mo plan normally includes 60 channels, so you get 40 more channels free with this offer. This promotion will expire in a few weeks. When this promo ends, new customers who sign up will only get 60 channels for $35/mo, and the 100-channel package will cost $60/mo.

The 100+ channel promotion includes popular cable channels like ESPN, USA, CNN, TBS, TNT, BBC World News, Comedy Central, Disney Channel, Nat Geo, and The Weather Channel.

No contracts, so you can cancel at any time.

Depending on how you sign up, you can get: The negative parts of the deal:

If you do sign up for DirecTV Now's $35/mo deal, you are sort-of locked in to the promotional rate. As this article explains, DirecTV Now can (and probably will) raise the price in the future to keep up with the cost of programming contracts.

Note, DirecTV Now does not give CBS. Other local broadcasts from Fox, ABC, and NBC may not be available, depending on where you live. For example, people in Chicago can get ABC, NBC, and Fox whereas Boston residents cannot get any local broadcasts through DirecTV Now. You can always buy an HD antenna (up to $30) to get local TV channels for free, but that can be a hassle.

DirecTV Now will not offer NFL Sunday Ticket like they do with DirecTV satellite customers, so you won't be able to watch out-of-network football games.

There is no DVR functionality right now, so if you miss a show when it airs, you have two options:
  • Wait 24 hours after your show airs, and DirecTV Now should have on-demand available for some major shows from ABC, Fox, and NBC for up to 72-hours.
  • Use other on-demand apps like the NBC App and CBS All Access to see shows after they air, but those may require a separate sign-up.
So, it can be a difficult to watch shows after they air through DirecTV Now.

PlayStation Vue and Sling TV do have DVR features, but don't have as many live TV channels. So, this deal is a mixed bag. The no DVR and limited on-demand may kill the deal for many people with busy schedules.
