Details:Items Sold in Britian Are On Sale:
As you may have heard in the news, Great Britian's currency, the Pound (£), has suddenly dropped in value by about 11% in the last day. This is really bad news for people in the UK.

This does mean people here in the US can buy items from the UK at a discount. UK people drive on the left and speak with a different accent, but when it comes to leather jackets, art, camera lenses, and region-free Blu-Ray movies, many are exactly the same as what is sold in the US.

Places to shop: Delivery from the UK can take 1-2 weeks.

When paying, use their own conversion to pay in US Dollars (incurs a foreign transaction fee). Or, if you choose to pay in GBP (Pound) instead of Dollars, and use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, the prices can be lower. Cards with no foreign currency fees include Capital One 360, Capital One Venture, Chase Sapphire Preferred, and American Express Gold & Platinum.

Be sure to do your research before buying anything, since some items are different than the US versions. For example:
  • Most games, DVD and Blu-Ray discs sold in the UK will not work in the US, unless it specifically says "region-free" in the description.
  • Some digital cameras, such as Canon cameras, are exactly the same as the US versions but with a warranty not valid in the US.
  • Wireless devices, including Wifi routers, may not work because they can use different frequencies in the UK. As Wikipedia shows, Europe and the US can use (but not always use) different Wifi frequencies.
  • Any electronics that you plug in may come with a UK power plug that will not fit in US outlets.
But some things are identical in the UK and the US:
  • Clothing, but the sizes are a little different. See this Women's clothing sizing chart, this Women's dress sizes chart, and this Men and Women's shoe, shirts, and sweater sizes chart.
  • Computer components are the same, such as hard drives, SSDs, and memory cards. However they are usually far more expensive in the UK than the US, even with the benefit of the better exchange rate.
  • Watches, jewelry, art, headphones, cables, and toys should all be the same.
  • Camera lenses are the same, but imported lenses could come with a warranty not valid in the US. Cameras are the same too, but come with charging cables for Europe outlets.
  • Some DVD and Blu-Ray movies are the same, but only when they say "region free" in the description. Otherwise, they will not play and will not work in the US.
Examples of some deals at Amazon.co.uk: To check Amazon.co.uk's final prices in US dollars, you need to add something to your cart and proceed to the final checkout page. You can review your order before submitting it, and the final price will appear on the right as shown in this example screenshot.

Update: Beware of duty taxes when importing items into the US. If you purchase at least $800 worth of items from the UK, you are required to pay a duty fee (tax) on the value of the goods. Many electronics and cameras can have a fee of around 2% to 5%. Some rates vary up to 37.5% depending on what the item is.
