I am delighted that after streaming extensively over the last four days, the new player has performed beautifully, with absolutely no anomalies during many, many hours of streaming archival concerts. Streaming of Live concerts, which are coded quite differently than archived concerts, has been very good as well. We watched a pair of live concerts yesterday, which totaled about 4 1/2 hours. There were two momentary hangs on the stream, but both were during a lightning storm in our immediate area, and both recovered spontaneously. After the storm ended, the streaming performed flawlessly for the next 3 hours. I'm pretty confident that the two events should be attributed to the storm, and don't represent a problem with the unit. We have a couple of live concerts next weekend, and I can update my comments with the results from them later.
Setup was very easy. I'm using an ethernet connection, and I haven't tried the WiFi connection at all. I was able to run the first firmware update via ethernet with no problems. We have also set up and used Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, YouTube and Pandora with no problems. The Amazon Instant Video app does include a selection for Recently Watched, which the apps on my other devices lacked. That is a great improvement, now that we are able to resume watching partially watched programming without digging around.
Operation is extremely fast, especially compared to the older LG unit. I opted to use Quick Start, which presents the Home screen almost instantaneously, which is a kick. I know it will use a bit more electricity, and I may change that in the future, but I really like the speedy startup. The remote is quite small, about 5 1/8" x 1 3/4" x 3/4", and nicely laid out. The Netflix, and Favorite buttons are very convenient. I set up the DCH app for our Favorite, since we watch it so much, and the convenience and speed of starting the app is quite stunning. I can easily reassign the Favorite app anytime, I doubt that we will ever stop using Netflix, so I don't see that selection becoming obsolete anytime soon. I noted that for most of the apps that I use, the apps tend to utilize the main function keys, which makes operation quite convenient. The Home screen shows the main selected apps, and My Apps, and navigation around the screen is very quick.
I will continue to use my Nexus Player, for the Google infrastructure apps, especially Play Movies and Play Music, but I am now able to retire my old Sony Google TV, and the LG BluRay player
Physically, the unit is very small compared to the LG, and mostly plastic, with no indicators except for a small green LED to indicate power on. That is all fine with me. Having the power supply in the power connector isn't my favorite, as it can complicate plug placement, especially on a power strip or UPS, but I can live with that minor negative.
We don't own a 3D or 4K TV or a Sony Playstation yet, so I haven't tested those functions, but we are ready for them in the future. BluRay disk performance is fine, as expected. Picture and Audio quality was as crisp and clear as I can ask for 1080P material. All in all, I'm quite satisfied that, at least initially, the 6500 has met all of my expectations, and I would definitely recommend it, especially for anyone using the DCH app.
The disc playback is flawless, my DVD's look nearly as good as Blu-ray's. Streaming Netflix and Amazon is absolutely perfect, as is streaming over the home network. Some may not like it but, I love that when you're streaming video from another device when the end of the video comes it moves on to the next one instead of just stopping and leaving a blank screen like the PS3 did. I love the user interface as well, very simple and easy to use and understand. I really like some of the available apps, like the Red Bull sports channel app, a lot of content on that one with no commercials. There were a couple of apps that I tried that wouldn't load up a selected program from within them, Fox News was one of them. I really don't care about them, I was only trying them to see how well everything worked. Not getting Fox News I kind of considered a blessing in disguise, lol. For the most part though the apps work and stream very well. I have a LOT of movies and other video's as well as music on our desktop computer so, streaming capabilities are very important to me, I can't stress enough how great it works for this, just perfect. The reviewers complaining about streaming issues must not have fast enough wifi/internet connection, that's the only thing that makes any sense to me.
Besides dedicated Home and Netflix buttons on the remote there's a Favorite button that can be assigned to any app you choose for one-click access. There's minor control over your tv with the BD player remote as well, just power, input, and volume, not a lot but, helpful to have, although I always use my home theater for sound and the volume control won't work for that.
I set it with the quick-start option and I have to say that quick-start is not an adequate description, instant-start is more like it. When you power it up the home screen comes up instantly with this setting enabled. I haven't had it long enough to have had a chance to really put it through the paces, trying out everything it has to offer but, I have used it enough to know that I am very pleased with how it performs, as long as it lasts for a while I couldn't be happier with it. Worth every penny and then some.
