An up-convert DVD player uses digital interpolation (guesswork) to convert a standard DVD movie from its native 480p to 1080p for viewing on an HDTV screen. While the quality is not as good as high-definition, it is better than a standard DVD player. These days Blu-Ray high-definition players cost anywhere from $150 to $250, plus $5 to $30 per Blu-Ray movie.
