There are some reports that Google will continue to offer Google Voice free within the US by playing ads called Ring-Back Advertisements. Those would be relevant ads - say for a local florist or the nearest drug store - that would play instead of the ring sound you would normally hear when waiting for the person to answer the phone. Beware that a Voice-over-IP service may not work with emergency calls (911), so you should keep a cell phone on-hand in case of emergencies.
