Details:Rebates:
There are a lot of deals out there that are "price after rebate". Personally, I hate rebates, but it looks like they are here to stay. Whenever you are thinking about purchasing something that comes with a rebate, ask yourself these questions:
  • If I never get the rebate, was the price that I paid worth it?
  • Is filling out the rebate forms and mailing them actually worth my time?
I consider a simple price shown with a rebate to actually mean: "So I pay this price to purchase the item and chances are that within 6-8 weeks I will receive some cash back if I actually remembered to take time from my busy schedule to fill out the required forms, cut the UPC from the box, and mail it."

So many times do I find a deal like "6-pack of AA batteries for $10 and there's a $9 rebate making the final total $1". Honestly, taking the time to fill out my name & address and lick an envelope and stamp is not worth the $9. And what will I do with a $9 check that I receive 6-8 weeks later? Anything that comes with a rebate of less than $20 is often not considered a "hot deal" in my mind, which is why you will hardly ever see something posted here with such a small rebate amount.

There are plenty of great after-rebate deals to be found, and the number of after-rebate deals will probably increase heavily this year. This is probably because some companies want to make their products more attractive for impulse buying, and they count on most customers not sending in rebates at all. Also, because most rebates require the buyer to cut-out the UPC symbol on the product box, the product becomes unreturnable. Here's some advice: If you order a product that has a rebate, be sure to print out or copy the mail-in rebate form first. Some sites are known to remove rebate forms before the rebate period expires. If the rebate form disappears off the site before you get a copy of it, contact that site to inquire about retreiving the rebate form. Because rebates require a cutout of the UPC making the product unreturnable, make sure you are certain that you actually want to keep the item or make sure you have a buyer ready if you decide not to keep the item. Fill out and send in the rebate immediately after purchase. Chances of you never receiving your rebate will increase as the days go by, mostly because you may forget or lose interest, or you may lose the rebate forms or UPC on the box.
